Maya Love Shkolnik is a Ukrainian-American interdisciplinary artist working in contemporary Slavic art, psychoanalysis, and performance. Maya earned her BA at Columbia University and studied Eastern European literature as a visiting student at the University of Oxford. She currently works in production at Performa and serves as the head of media at Dr. Beatrice Beebe’s communication sciences lab. Previously, she worked in marketing at The Ukrainian Museum. In her personal practice of photography and film, she aims to interrogate the interdependencies of her Ukrainian, Russian, and American identities.

Spanning documentary and conceptual photography, Maya’s work captures an “atmospheric” quality, according to her dad. Her subjects are inspired by coursework in psychoanalysis, from a performance work, “Confess,” with her mother to an ongoing video project at Russian borders titled “Fatherland.”

Maya’s other work includes event photography and photography assisting. She photographs weekly meetings and events for the United Nations Association in NYC (March 2023 - present). She also regularly assists photographer, Emmie America, for Vogue Portugal (July 2024), Meduza Project (December 2023), and Nike (July 2023). In 2024, she hosted a summer group art show titled “Immediate Art” showing 20 friends’ works in her unfurnished apartment, creating a gallery series in collaboration with Ben Shakespeare.
